One day I randomly picked up a wig headband that was inspired by a traditional Chinese style that would be worn with Hanfu. Unfortunately for the hair piece, I pick up wigs and accessories all the time and then they just sit there for a while before I actually decide to do something with them.
Another addiction is floral headbands off of aliexpress that could ALSO go with hanfu. I think you might see where I'm going with this.
As another weird added context, I've always wanted to go to a renaissance fair but never quite knew what to wear...THEN SUDDENLY HANFU CAME TO MIND.
All of that to say, I finally got my very first hanfu!
Since it was my first hanfu (and I already had the idea to wear it to a renaissance fair) I was looking for something affordable but decent quality that would also be easy to wear and exist in in the relative outdoors.
I found a couple sites that carried some variety and then went about picking one out!
I wasn't sure what color to get though. I thought red was too predictable, I don't look good in blue (one day I'll do a color analysis!), purple can also be an "ehh" color... so I just went with my tried and true favorite color. PINK! Except I wanted more depth than just pink. The answer? Pink and green! One of my favorite color combos!
This hanfu comes in 3 different colors way : All pink, Pink and Green and Blue and Pink.
The price for the hanfu was (at the time of posting) $78.20
One of the main reasons I choose this one was that it seemed to include the bits and pieces that make the outfit come together like the pearl accessories.
In total, the outfit includes the Top, Skirt, Outer Robe, Shawl, Pearl Accessories for the wait, Ribbon accessories that attach to the outer robe and also other ribbon-y flower attachments. There's also little bells on it!
Starting with the fabric, it's really beautiful and seems perfect for this. It's light and flowy but also soft and sturdy. Fortunately, it's also super easy to steam!
Now let's talk about putting it on.
It's a decent amount of fabric. The sleeves are long, the ties are long, the ribbons are long. Everything catches on each other when you're tying yourself in, haha. So make sure to take your time!
The top goes on first, then the outer robe and then the skirt ties it all in.
This is the embroidery on the top part of the skirt~
I was confused at first on how I was supposed to know where the pearls attached to UNTIL I SAW IT. There's little loops behind the pink bows that attach to larger pearls that are on the skirt (and some on the outer robe for the ribbon to attach to). It's actually SO EASY once you know this.
Behind the pink bows are small elastic loops that go around the larger pearls that are sewn onto the skirt. Makes putting on the accessories super easy!
The skirt goes from green to pink at the bottom.
As far as length goes, the skirt hit a decent length on me but I could definitely see this working for someone even a couple inches taller than (I'm 5'2").
The huge embroidery on the sleeves!
As far as overall sizing goes, the sizing guide helps a little but there are some things to take into consideration.
Size (IN) | Bust | Clothing Length | Dress Length |
XS | 36.22-39.37 | 29.53 | 36.22 |
S | 37.80-39.37 | 29.53 | 37.80 |
M | 40.94-43.31 | 31.50 | 39.37 |
L | 42.52-47.24 | 31.50 | 41.73 |
Size (CM) | Bust | Clothing Length | Dress Length |
XS | 92-100 | 75 | 92 |
S | 96-100 | 75 | 96 |
M | 104-110 | 80 | 100 |
L | 108-120 | 80 | 106 |
I reached out to lolitainside's team to clarify about sizing and this hanfu is meant to be looser fitting. I ended up choosing a size M with that in mind.
Length wise, I feel like it fit well with the skirt hitting the floor at my height. I've seen images where the shoes are meant to show and others where they're not so I think there's definitely wiggle room for taller people.
LET ME TELL YOU THOUGH. Putting this on yourself can be a little bit of a hassle. Because the sleeves are super long and also go on before you tie the skirt, the sleeves get caught along with all the ribbons so you have to hold those out of the way, haha.
The under top is a simple loose fitted tube top. It comes with clear straps to be extra secure.
The outer robe/top was a little more tricky for me. I found it both too short and too big in some areas, haha. I do have a slightly larger bust and if I want the robe to sit slightly off my shoulders like in the images, the top pulls up from under the skirt a bit. (It's really nothing impressive but there's something there I guess when comparing it to the model on the site lol)
The skirt is a wrap skirt with a notch in the left side for you to slide the right tie into so it'll wrap around and meet in the back. I do think I should have probably gotten the S size. The M skirt fit but I do think the S size would have fit a bit tighter which would have kept the top in better?
TLDR: Take your time putting it on because it's a lot of fabric anddddd I have an AirPods body and need a smaller skirt but a bigger top in clothes. LOL
At the end of the day, for the cost, this hanfu is SO pretty. I felt like a fairy while I was in it and kept spinning around. It may need a couple of safety pins depending n how you want to wear it but so worth it!
